I have decided I want to record visually or if I or my participant cant make the time , through audio for my inquiry.

I have already recorded 3 different professionals some of my questions and received their feedback. I am planning on using the video i have already created but hopefully I will expand on my inquiry and be able to record again on new people.

I feel a video interview is the best way for me to collect data , it also gives a less formal approach to the inquiry which I like and hopefully will get more honest answers. I didn't want my answers to be confined to boxes to tick on a survey or to just be an bystander and observe. I wanted to make a brain think about why that individual reacts the way they do. After all, we do a lot of critical reflection here on BAPP. I have written my findings on a previous blog which you can all see and the video is up on youtube with everyones permission.

Task 5c. Ethical framework and how it fits into professional inquiry.

Ethics was a vast and interesting topic to research and learn about. Before finishing the Reader , I didn't fully understand the term 'ethics'. I thought it was simply, if you were to carry out procedures in the correct way. However, I have learnt about different niche's inside the word 'ethics' i.e; personal, society, theoretical. Each more interesting than the last.

"Every art & every inquiry and similarly every action and pursuit, is thought to aim at some good".(Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, Book 1, 350 B.C.E)

The first thing I found alluring was how far back ethics run in humanity. Back to the ancient Greek ,where they mainly believed in a persons virtue, their character and were they good or bad? Aristotle believed in becoming good as a person rather then to do good. I would claim him to be a Virtue Ethicist

Consequentialist - Lying may be seen as wrong however sometimes the benefits of lying are far superior than the consequences to it.

Deontologist - Lying is wrong all the time and no good shall come from lying.

Virtue Ethicist - Lying will depend on benefit and intentions, wether good or bad. Lying for the wrong reasons may cause damage to your character.

These viewpoints may add up to approaching normative ethics "which examines the principles that people use when they make moral choices".
When writing my views about the case study's in Reader 5 , I found that using the descriptive ethics style to record my thoughts made my findings a lot shorter and more matter of fact. Leading me to believe I am passionate and have more to say when I discuss ethics normatively.
I believe I am this way and have so many morals due to family and upbringing but also from social media. TV shows and blockbuster films always show the hero sacrificing themselves for the greater good or simply unselfishly. Social media sites such as Facebook show reports on animal cruelty or discrimination under scrutiny with the deontologist ethics. BBC aired a programme about being homosexual in Russia today and the awe full discrimination they go through and how the law and social media accept and even promote it.

The morals we believe are taught to us and change from time or place.

Case study three I found significant to me, "The Dance Class". My questions seem to find them selves around the self esteem of dancers from the industry and the rejection we get from it. So went Alicia was taking part in her inquiry in the third school and found a teacher to "belittle " a dancer , to then see it affect her emotionally , to get the response "I am only preparing her for the real world". Too often this happens & I have experienced it personally, as it is true , this is the way the industry is. But why? It is not ethically correct!

Consequentialist - Yes it may be harmful to bring down the self esteem and criticise a dancer but it is for their own greater good as it will make them a better dancer. Hence, getting the domino effect of being a better dancer, creating a better show, producing the need for more tickets and boosting the economy.

Deontologist - Why is one child being singled out and her feelings made less important than the others. Children it is often said have the mind of sponges, soaking everything up, so why would you critic them and upset them as they will remember that for a substantial amount of time. No good can come from upsetting anybody.

Virtue Ethicist - Based on the outer good, if this child wants to become a professional dancer in her gut, than this is what she must face. What does it say about the teachers character? He is insensitive to others feelings but does have their best interest in mind. Others may say he is heartless and callus but this is their opinion that they're entitled to.His intensions seem to be good by stating " preparing her for the real world", he wants her to succeed.

Although this case study looks at the teaching methods, it does intwine with my questions about low self-esteem coming directly from the industry and even in early education.

When I take part in my inquiry I will use the BERA guidelines to go by for the safety of my participants. When i recorded some previous participants for my work I didn't even realise that I had done it so ethically. Asking their permission to upload their answers onto sites , promising to delete data of my personal devices after completion of the task. Although I feel now that I should have asked them all the exact same questions as to be fairer.

My place of work is currently in retail at a high end fashion store ,French Connection. I ended up using a spidergram to find some of the ethics that run through the company , as I have learnt from this course that I work best visually. Above is a picture.

1. Plagiarism could occur as when we put an item through the till we have to put it through on the name of whoever influenced that particular sale. There is a prize for top sellers, so some people would be motivated to cheat and put someone else's work/ sale through as their own. This is highly frowned upon and would result in disciplinary action. French Connection wants to recognise and award good work but not plagiarism!

2. Health and Safety wise , every season we have a big print off of health & safety rules and regulations booklet that we read through and sign to say we have read and understood it. This I suppose covers them if I have an accident at work from ,for example using a ladder incorrectly and then falling.

3. We as for customers E-mails currently to enter a prize draw. We have to state that their details will only be on our data base and nobody else has access to their data as we abide by the data protection act.

4. The way we look at French Connection is important and we sign a uniform agreement to wear in season uniform and the amount of uniform we can buy is stated. Management is allowed to influence our uniform choices to look as professional as possible ,while being fashionable at the same time.

5.Being considerate on the shop floor is not just a good work ethic to have, it also helps everybody out. If one person is serving but needs to check stock or do something else , I would just do it automatically so they can carry on serving to their best potential. Consideration towards customers as well is important. Some customers love having help to find a dress for a wedding but other preferrer to be left alone , we have to judge their needs and be considerate towards them even if they are not back.

IQUIRY QUESTIONS ANSWERED

So, I finally managed to get a peice of everybody's free time and recorded some friends & family to answer my inquiry questions. It was interesting to see how different their answers were to the same questions. The first person interviewed is Shereen, she is as professional dancer. The second is Phil , a retail worker who has worked in retail for 18 years and then there is Natasha who has beenin both the perfomance industry and the 9-5 "Real World" idustry.
My questions are in a previous blog but I felt they needed re-writting slighty as I had to explain each question to the person in question.I did not asked Phil question 3 as I felt he would not be able to answer it .Also I added an extra question to Natasha as I found her answers interseting as she has been in both situations.

Inquiry questions.

1. How do you as a professional cope with rejection from an audition/job?

2. In your specific job training ,were you taught that there is only one way to deal with/learn a new task/technique. And do you think that is correct or do you believe there are different learning tools suited to each individual to cope with new tasks?

3. Do you as a performer suffer from a lack of confidence due to the idustry and does this affect us negatively?

4. When going for an audition/job , do casting directors/agents/management base their choices purely on the CV and training that idividual has had or do you think they take in to account how you act on the day i:e your personality ,look, nerves ?

5.(Natash's  extra question) Have you noticed that there is a pressure to be a certain look or persona in the performance idustry and is it present in a more formal work sector?

Body Image in dancers

In relation to my inquiry and post below , I found a YouTube video from teenage American dancers on body Image. Its incredible what that say. One girl said " I don't feel fat ,fat but i don't feel like a skinny person or a qualifying person". Talking about going on diets at the age of 12.  It just really shocked me that dancers so young feel this way. Dance in my opinion is much bigger in the US  meaning a lot more people and adolescence must feel similar. It was just a thought provocing video for you.

Rejection from and the mental attributes of dancing as a professional.

I feel very ancious to start again as I have been so busy in london working and auditioning , I've gotten caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all, as usually I'm at home in Peterborough working in retail and reading through Readers. I recently got to the end of a Disneyland Paris audition. I was absolutely exstatic,  I got through the first round and then the second.I had my hair and make up done by the make up artist and then stood in front of the judges as they scrutinised every detail of my face to see if it fit the character. I didn't get the job in the end, which is a shame because i would ADORE to live in Paris but what will be , will be.
As I want to base my Inquiry on or around dancers and performers coping with rejection and the low self- esteem that may occur from the rejection , I found some interesting blogs that talk about it.

The first blog is from a mothers point of view. She has a daughter who wants to be a dancer. This lady talks about making everything positive as children are so vulnerable to critique. "Disappointment can lead to a point of self destruction if it is left to manifest, so it is essential that she learn how to respond effectively".  Many young children start dancing from as young as 3 but is it healthy to be put in such critical industry so young as it does effect self esteem so strongly? This blog was nice to see from the point of a constructive dance mum instead of a "Pushy mum" which if any of you watch the TV show 'Dance Moms' you see quite often.  The link for this blog is below.

Another interesting blog , is from and ex ballerina and current ballroom dancer. She offers helpful tips about dealing with rejection and lists some very famous people who had to deal with rejection early in their own careers.  She talks about accepting what you can not control , like the producer wanting a certain height or hair colour but then owning the things that you can control , like the way you danced and how you acted in front of the casting director.  Rejection is a big factor in any professionals life but I feel the performer faces rejection more so. I wonder how an average worker would cope with such rejection..every week maybe even daily as we do? I have asked and recorded some questions that I have written in the blog post before this , to professionals in the industry and not , to see their different views. I will be putting up the video on youtube shortly and posting a link. It has just been hard getting to everybody and finding free times that is good for everyone.  The link for the retired ballerina is below.
